The glass rods or rods are placed on a “piera” of refractory material.
In the drawing, in addition to pieces of red and white opaque glass cane, pieces of black filigree are also used.
The filigree is a particular glass rod where there is color inside, in this case black, and crystal outside.
The procedure for making the rod of colored glass, filigree, zanfirico or murrine is quite similar and is generically called “tirar cana”.
The master prepares the “pastòn” on his barrel, a glass cylinder while the assistant prepares a kind of glass disc on his “consaura”. Once everything is heated up, the master takes the rod from the help with the “consaura” attaches it to the “pastòn” expertly spreads his arms, stretching everything and passes his rod to the assistant.
This moves away letting the glass slide like a thread, varying the speed of removal will create a more or less thin thread. On the ground there are wooden planks where the glass thread rests without undergoing thermal changes that could break it.
The result is a glass rod even 13 or 14 meters long which will then be broken into smaller rods with the tips of the tweezers wet with water.
In the case of a “tirata” of murrine it is necessary to put the rods in “tempera” in the annealing oven to cool them slowly.
We called the cup Doge because it is somewhat reminiscent of the shape of his hat.
